IMAGINARY - Interactive
Interactive Installations - Experience mathematics on your own
An important part of the IMAGINARY exhibition consists of interactive mathematical installations. The idea is to let users experiment with mathematics and create beautiful images. This way the underlying mathematics is discovered by the visitors on their own. Various programs are available at the exhibition and on the internet to be downloaded for free and to be used at home or in school. The programs have been developed for IMAGINARY or especially adapted. In this section we present you five programs.
Surfer - Algebraic surfaces self-made
Surfer The SURFER Program is a core piece of the exhibition. On a huge touch screen visitors can create algebraic surfaces in a simple and intuitive way. One does not have to be a mathematician to simply change a pre-defined formula and observe in real time what new amazing figures, i.e. the solution of the set formulas, appear. The figure can be turned in space, changed, colored, etc. Who finds an interesting surface, a funny one, a pointy one, or one that resembles a real object? The Surfer program and more information is found on the SURFER page.
Cinderella - Online experiments with geometry and physics
Simply create geometrical contructions of different types, i.e. applications in non-Euclidian geometry, fractals or symmetry groups. Additionally, virtual physics simulations using masses, electric charge, fields, etc. can be carried out. All experiments are easily drawn with the mouse and get alive with a single click. Some of the applications presented have been devised especially for IMAGINARY.
More information on Cinderella: cinderella.de. The IMAGINARY experiments are available here: Cinderella and IMAGINARY.
3D_XPLORMATH - Mathematical exploration in three dimensions
3D_XPLORMATH is one of the most comprehensive programs to explore mathematics. Countless objects, animations and possibilities invite the user to even experience them using 3D glasses! 3D_XPLORMATH is developed by the 3DXM consortium, an international group of volunteer mathematicians.
The program is available for free at 3d-xplormath.org . Sample programs and web applications can be found here.
jReality - A virtual mathematical world
jreality allows you to experience mathematical objects in a virtual reality environment. Users can climb on huge mathematical objects, enter them and perceive them as "real" objects. Like in a computer game one approaches the different objects using a space navigator. jReality was developed by the team around Ulrich Pinkall and Steffen Weissmann in Berlin.
The program can be downloaded at www.jReality.de. A special IMAGINARY web-application can be started here.
Morenaments - Painting in crystallographic groups
With morenaments you can easily paint symmetrical patterns in one of the 17 symmetry groups of the Euclidian space. Discover geometrical properties and investigate their inner structure of spinning centers and mirror axes. Or feel free to paint in a creative way and experience how a few strokes fill the entire space in a beautiful ornament. You can start the program to paint in the Euclidian space here. Note that explanation texts are in German only.
